Ceramic Coating FAQ

  • What is ceramic coating, and how does it work?

Ceramic coating is a high performance coating used to create a thermal barrier. It is primarily used for exhaust headers, manifolds, turbo housings and other parts exposed to high heat environments. Ceramic coatings are primarily designed for both metal substrates.

  • What are the advantages of ceramic coating?

Withstands extreme temperatures (1200°) without discoloring

Provides superior protection against corrosive environments and thermal shock

Increases engine performance due to thermal protection

    Lowers overall engine compartment temperature

Increases durability and longevity of components

    Decreases the cooling time

Available in a variety of finishes and colors

  • How thick is ceramic coating?

Ceramic is generally applied at a thickness of 0.5 to 1.0 mils.

  • What can be ceramic coated?

Any metal that may be subjected to extreme temperatures while it’s in use.

  • What colors & effects are available?

Color selection for high-temp ceramics is more limited than those available in powder. However, numerous blacks, silvers, golds and a limited selection of bright colors are available. Finishes are typically metallic or solid colors with a satin or matte sheen.

  • Can I see what colors you have in stock on this web site?

Unfortunately, there are just too many variables that cause the colors to look differently on a computer screen compared to the chip sample. We therefore ask that you visit us to see our color selection in person.

  • Will you be able to match my item's color exactly?

We have thousands of colors and effects available, with many in stock. In the event that we cannot find a suitable match, we do offer custom color matching for an additional cost.

  • Can you just tell me over the phone how much it will cost to ceramic coat my item?

We prefer not to give telephone estimates. The condition of the item and the choice of a particular ceramic coating will influence the cost. After seeing your item and selecting a coating we will provide you a written estimate. Telephone quotes are subject to change once the items are evaluated at our location.

  • I only have a few small items. Do you do that type of work?

Absolutely! We specialize in small batch ceramic coating. Keep in mind every order is subject to our minimum invoice.

  • How should my parts be prepped before I bring them to you?

We ask that you wash and degrease your parts as much as possible and that all bearings, seals, gaskets, and rubber components be removed before you drop them off. Additional prep costs will be applied for excessively dirty and greasy parts.

  • Can you mask areas that I don't want coated?

Yes. We use a series of silicone caps and plugs for masking threads and several styles of special high temp masking material for mating surfaces or close tolerance areas.

  • What is the difference between high temp powder and ceramic coating?

High temp powder is a silicon based powder designed to withstand 1000° F. We prefer to use ceramic coatings on parts that are exposed to a high heat environment. Ceramics can withstand higher temperatures and tend to provide better adhesion than high temp powders.
